There's lots of threads in this forum with discussions of why calcium and alkalinity need not be "balanced". I'm not aware of any chemistry to suggest otherwise. I do know this topic comes up a lot and I haven't seen any chemist suggest otherwise.
Thankyou for your reply .It seems we've taken this as far as we can for now.I'll look up some of those threads you mentioned and reread Farley's material. In the meantime,I'll wrestle with the notion that precision in proportions or balances which are inherrent in the ppm ranges may be insignificant.
