Hey all,
Just a note from Baton Rouge. The weather is beginning to turn ugly here. Some little storm called Katrina is comming this way. The freeways headed away from New Orleans are a parking lot.
My family is all buttoned up and ready for it, so we will ride out whatever hits Baton Rouge. I wish I was in Denver right now as this hurricane crap kind of freaks me out! Just a note to y'all sayin hi. Take care, I am hoping to get some good pictures to share with everyone when it's over.
Bill

I lived in New Orleans for more than 10 years and went through a few hurricanes ( nothing like this one though). If you haven't already done it - put big Xs in masking tape on your windows, it really does help. Good luck!

I don't know thatm asking tape will even help with this little lady...170 mph winds are pretty destructive....blades of grass can become deadly weapons at that speed.

Good luck man

Hey Bill, you be safe and take care of you and your kind down there. Hope you don't get the opportunity to do any saltwater fishing from your front porch. Pictures would be great!

God Bless

I just bought a 90 gal RR tank, pvc pipe, glue, ball valves, check valves and other equipment. I may have to crack open an ice cold brew and start plumbing! Too bad Del can't partake of some extra fumes! LOL! Me and my family are all tucked in for a couple days, cars are in a protected spot in the yard, GOD THE OAK TREES HERE ARE HUGE!! We should be all set, so you all take care and so will I.
C-YA,
Bill

Hey CB-
I can sniff them vapors from here. You and yours be safe. It looks scary as he** on the news. My best to you.

Did you mean that you parked the cars under those oaks? I've seen those big live oaks uprooted completely after a storm, they have very shallow roots and brittle branches, so please be careful. The very best of luck to you.

No, I parked the cars in the area I think is safest from the trees. Hopefully, my guess is correct!

Just woke up to wind and no power, set up battery air pumps and ,viola,... we have electricty again! Took the dogs out for an am potty break,(theirs, not mine), lots of wind and water, scared the crap out of the dogs...(worked to my advantage, he he he!) Not much damage here in B.R. so far. I am glad I am not in the direct path of this little lady though!
C-Y'all Later,
Bill

Hey all,
We just got our power back this afternoon! We are all ok, except for our car got squished by a tree...poor Neon. Baton Rouge went from 240,000 people to 775,000 and it is kaos here. Crime is outta control. We have to keep a bat with us just in case some nuts start stuff. People just do not know how to behave anymore. I just consider us lucky that Katrina veered to the east before landfall or we would have taken a direct hit and it would have leveled Baton Rouge.
I work with some folks that live, (or lived) in New Orleans and commuted here and they lost EVERYTHING. They have the clothes they could grab while they ran out the door, some have family missing still and feared dead. This is the worst experience I have ever been through. I tried to get some pics, but the rain and wind were a touch much for my camera, so they didn't come out as well as I hoped.
Well, gotta go and fight the crowds at Wal-Mart and get groceries, I'll post more later.
Bill... aka "Cajun Boy"

Glad to hear you're OK. Take care of yourself, and keep the bat handy til this clears.
R.A.

P.S. I hear Toyotas are uncrushable in storms.

Thanks for the update Bill. Sounds like it's a war down there. Be safe and wish you the best.
Good luck Cajun.
Brian

Bill-
I should be in the area soon. PM me a contact as I would love to hook up with a reefer.

Very glad to hear you and yours withstood the onslaught. Hang in there. There is good to be found in everything.

Hey all,
I thought of this thread and decided to bring it back on the anniversary of Katrina to touch on an update on things. This is not P.C. and is only my point of view as someone who spends alot of time driving around the gulf states.

In the last year, I have seen the goodness of this nation and its volunteers like Del be taken advantage of so badly, that I now refuse to help most people. I have seen cities around the nation welcome the N.O.LA. refugees, only to have their violent crime rates skyrocket, (look at Houston among others). I go through Miss., and, in areas, its been wiped clean by this storm. The folks there did not wait for the government to come "help them", they got off their butts, cleaned up their mess and started rebuilding. I am most impressed with these types of people. I am soooo sick of hearing that idiot Ray Nagin spout off that N.O. is the victim of racisim and that they would be further along if the city had a higher white population so the government would get it done more quickly. What a crock!! It is about "work ethic" and the fact that there are some in N.O. that got right to work cleaning their mess up, and assisting others do the same, but, that is the few that are doing this. Many are still raping, robbing and plundering the very cities that, out of the kindness of their hearts, invited these people to come there. These people were given 2 days to find a way out of N.O. and many did, many chose to stay and ended up looting the city, or dead. Most of the refugees want to go back to N.O., but say theres no jobs, well McDonalds and Burger King are paying $12.50 PLUS up to $5000.00 signing bonus if you stay for a year. Many stores are paying similar wages. They say they have no where to live, well where are all the people cleaning the area up living? Another point, most of the contractors would rather hire the people with a vested interest in the area, (locals), but there aren't many there, so they are bringing in laborers from across the nation to clean up someone elses belongings.

This has been a tragedy of a natural disaster, but the biggest tragedy, is that it is not the few that are abusing the system, it is the majority. I travel the gulf coast to fix my companies airplanes, as well as on family outings, and find it hard to stomach that the people who are complaining that nothing is being done fast enough, won't simply pick up a shovel, or broom and start helping themselves.
This being a religous area should remember the saying,.."The Lord Helps Those Who Help Themselves"
I'm through with this rant for now. I welcome comments, just not too inflaming as the thread Nazi's will shut us down again.
May God, (or whoever), bless us with a mild hurricane season,
Bill-CajunBoy of HETMARC

AMEN! I'll tell ya what, when the hurricane went through last year my heart went out to all of those that had lost everything to include loved ones. I thought it was an extraordinary act that many cities to include Denver welcomed the refugees with open arms. Now you hear about the crime that that kindness brought about and its sickening. My hat goes off to those who did get on their feet again to continue moving forward rather than sit on their asses expecting good old uncle sam to do it for them.

Glad to hear you guys pulled through ok, and I agree with you 100% on this one.
