Those two articles discuss using vinegar in limewater. One possible side-affect of that is increasing bacterial growth, via the acetate present. Calcium acetate could have the same effect. The bacteria will consume nitrogen and phosphorus in the process of growing, and then could be removed via a skimmer, leading to lower levels in the water column.
