Calcium chloride from pool store

Lots of people have used pool store products in their tanks successfully, although there aren't any detailed analyses of those products available.

I use pool store soda ash for my alk. But I use Dowflake snow & ice melt for calcium chloride. It's under $20 for a 50lb bag. I've been using these for over 5 years now with no ill effects.

Leslie pool hardness increaser is made by Dow and is 94-97% CaCl. I have used it for years without a problem. Go to the store and ask the see the msds, it will have the manufacturer and the percentages on there.

I would suggest a PDS over an MSDS if possible, the MSDS only can be counted on to have hazardous materials on it.

MSDS is not just for hazardous chemicals. Here is MSDS for pool hardness plus at leslie pool supplies.

I haven't heard of any contamination problems with pool chemicals, but I agree that the MSDS is not sufficient to determine safety. Trace contaminants like copper can be an issue, for example.

All in all, I'd give it a try and just watch the tank carefully for a week or so.
