calcium magnesium acetate?

Well, it would boost calcium, magnesium, alkalinity, and drive bacteria growth (like vinegar/vodka/sugar).

I can't think of a good use for it in our applications.

sounds like a winner to me :D

is it 1:1:1, ca:mg:co3? would it contribute much to cal/alk without overdosing the carbon?

It will supply way too much magnesium for a given need of calcium. As a magnesium supplement, it supplies way too much alkalinity for raising magnesium levels.

Nothing uses calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity in these ratios, so it doesn't really balance any particular needs in the aquarium.

If it were adequately pure (evidence of which is almost certainly not going to be provided), it might be useful as a little daily supplement in addition to a much larger amount of calcium and alkalinity, so as to help balance the magnesium loses due to calcification. One cannot wait for an apparent need for magnesium, however. It would need to be added very frequently in small amounts (because of the fact it supplies alkalinity as well)

Bear in mind that dosing acetate can potentially cause a depletion of O2 if too much is added at once.

my intention was for daily C-dosing with the benefits of cal/alk/mag supplementation. a possibility, but then comes the purity issue.

thank you for your input.

i dont now anything about the magnesium acetate but i all ready use the calcium acetate, but not to increse the ca levels or help the bacterias, i use them to bind phosphat, in that way the skimmer can export them.
just be careful with the dose as Randy says it can consume the O2

Like those who dose vodka to boost bacterial growth?

I use the calcium acetate all the time. My tank is not as happy without it. I make my own by mixing vinegar and lime.
