can cheesecloth be used as a drain?

i am going to get my live sand tonight from a friend and it is super-fine and i was wondering if i could use cheese cloth to drain the water from the sand when im done rinsing it?

( it wont be live it is from his old set up so it definetly needs washed)

Tricks for rinsing sand could be a thread all its own. I haven't used or heard of one that really works well other than the basically standard "throw in it a bucket and waste enough water to float an aircraft carrier" method...
