can they be cleaned and reused at all to extend their life?

if so how?

what is the life of the various parts? my water has a TDS level of about 475 out of the tap.

i just checked my tds level in my make up water and found i was putting tap water in my tank for i don't know how long, a few hundred gallons probably.

Cleaning a membrane is a risky thing at best. For the $35 to $40 its best to replace the membrane rather than try to clean it, which usually only helps for a short time anyway.
Membranes should last about 3 years at that raw water TDS if you use good quality prefilters and carbons and remember to always replace them at 6 month intervals. Be sure to disinfect the housings while you have them empty to eliminate any bacteria growth.

OK, n00b question. How would one go about disinfecting the housings? (vinegar?)

I'm just getting into RO/DI and want to make sure I am prolonging the life of the unit.

Thanks!
