Can I frag photosynthetic sponge in tank?

Hi,

My sponge is attached to a large feature rock that I would really rather not take out, but I'd like to frag it. Can I cut it in tank or will it poison the water? Not finding a clear answer online.

Yellows are particularly bad about releasing toxins, but they're not the only ones. I would take it out to the qt tank and let it recover, and don't cut it in the tank.

Many sponges (I can't see yours) constantly move waters through their systems, and any disruption (pulling from water) may result in the whole thing dying.

If it's the plating type mine turns blue or purple depending on light but this type is very hardy and can handle some time exposed to air. I wouldn't leave it out long but should be OK if you're gluing a frag or transferring rock to another tank.
