Can low nutrients cause a problem?

I have a 90 gallon sps dominated tank. Its been setup for about 6 months the only fish i have in there right now is a spotted mandarin. I been having a problem with some corals with polyp extension and i've had some problems stn on some corals and burn't tips on another. I run the elose planet 2 mh fixture. I see different problems with different corals, stn, tip burn, poor polyp extension can this all be caused from low nutrients?

Low nutrients can cause problems. Usually with LOW nutrients you will see pale colors and limited growth.

Tip Burn and PE problems ear mark Alk issues, either low or swings.

Check your Alk for the 9 to 11 range.
Check your Mg for the 1300 to 1500 range.
And just in case check for depressed pH and make sure SG is 1.024 to 1.026.
If these water parameters are good then maybe they're getting too much light. I'd check the water first.

Also---If you are carbon/bacteria dosing. Alks 10 and higher can burn tips. (see zeo and vodka bacteria threads for details)

What's you alkalinity? That can burn tips. As far as nutrients go, I'm a big believer in feeding nori daily to my tangs. A couple of tangs with big bellies = lots of poop in the water and that makes for a nutrient rich environment.

I think CleveYank types faster than I do. At least we're thinking along the same lines.

Besides a stint as thrash and metal shredder and classical I typed alot of research for 2 degrees...oh yeah and lots of chat ;) I got chops.

But yeah we're falling off the same tree on this mcoomer. It's probably in the water chemistry. Check there 1st.

temp 78 s.g 1.025 ca 430 alk 9 mag 1400 tested PH at like 4 in the morning a couple days ago it was 8.3 nitrates like 0.5 on elos test kit and 0 phos on elos test kit also.
