can strontium and iodide be toxic?

i had a very successful 1 year old 135 gallon reef tank. i was dosing very small quantities of both stontium and iodide for 1 year, then i made increases without testing but used directions on both bottles. i went up to 6.5 ml with both but should of done half with the strontium at first.
do you think that this increase killed my blue tang, midas goby and banded shrimp, over a 1 month period. i lessened the does but now my yellow tang has red streaks. all other fish, inverts and coral look fine.
what should i do? should i go back to the original doses or just do water changes?
please help me

Well a water change is always good as well as regular ones at about 30% monthly.

Have you tested the two levels and if so what test brand?

Hmm, iodine can definitely be toxic. Since you're not measuring, it's hard to know what the level is. I would stop dosing iodine, and do some large (25% or so) water changes. There isn't any evidence that iodine dosing is helpful in general, so I stopped dosing iodine a few years ago.

I also chose not to dose strontium, due to questions about its value and the difficulty in testing. If you wish to continue dosing, I would recommend getting a test kit and targeting natural seawater levels.

This article talks about water parameters:

when in doubt, water change! how often are you wiping your glass? has it increased over the time you have increased you dosing. I found that when i did algae began growing on my glass rapidly. i quit dosing the tank now and just do a 10% change every week and everything seems to be happy in my tank.

Never dose anything unless you have tested and know your tank is low. That said iodine and strontium can be toxic and there really isn't a point to dose either. Your tank doesn't need very much of either. I wouldn't both dosing or even testing for either. The only things I ever dose is baking soda, calcium chloride and kalk. These are all for alkalinity or calcium which are really the only 2 important things to keep an eye on in a mature reef (for dosing)

That's what I do. Magnesium, Calcium and Alkalinity. Nothing else. I change 8 gallons of water per week in my 105 gallon system and use IO salt.

Pat
