Can you go wrong with the Nikon D50?

I was considering the Canon S2 IS or Sony H-1 then I thought I would see what else there was for a little bit more. So I went to wolf camera again today since I was right by it and saw the Nikon D50. Ive read and seen good things from this camera and I found it on buydig.com for $488 body. I like this price range but I am a complete beginner to cameras. Minus using the disposable LOL.

I just want something that can take great pics. Macros or long distance. Nature shots or just family pics. Guess a pretty good all around camera.

I saw some pics that Jablo75 posted and I thought they were just awesome. So I know the camera has potential for some great pics.

Just curious what others that has this camera or has experience in the photo hobby think of this camera?

Hey Opiy
I was in the same tank as you. I wanted something a little better than the entry level regular digi cam, but wanted the ability to change the glass, for macro work and all around stuff. So I looked at a lot and read many reviews and since I to am a novice wanted something user friendly and as I advance the camera would be able to advance with me. So I bought the Nikon D50 and have been extremely happy with it. I know its not the best digi SLR, but for the price and my ability it is a perfect match so far. Hope this helps.

Yes it does. You are in the same situation as me. Thanks for the answer. I am pretty sure I will get this camera. I can't say I have ever read anything bad about it plus like you said I think I could grow with it for a while.

Exactly, you'll be happy with it! Thats the great thing about it, it does not take long to read the manual and start taking decent pics(very user freindly). Heres a pic I recently took with the D50, keep in mind I am a total newbie to DSLR.

In the long run you'll be happier with an slr [as opposed to a point and shoot] if you plan on getting into photography at all. Just remember that once you've bought the [D50 or whatever] body the spending of significant dollars is not over. You'll need at least one Nikon lens.
Full disclosure

hehe I really don't know much at all about cameras but is the D50 a SLR? or no ?

Oh yea I have read some on the lenses and I saw they can easily get up there. I planned on buying just the body and then getting a pretty nice lens for it because I read somewhere maybe here that the stock lens isn't that good at all.

EDIT: OO a good starter lens

Take pics of Mars with that I guess.

Actually I planned to spend around $200 on a nice "General Use" lens. Any suggestions?

Sorry that was confusing- the D50 is an slr, or dslr since it's digital.
Lots of choices for all-round lenses for Nikonians- on the less expensive side is the kit lens, there's a 28-105 worth looking at, and I've heard people speak well of the 28-200. There are others too- maybe a little more than you wanted to spend though.

you can tell hes does this for a living. The cost of the lenses he uses is up there. awesome pictures though.

I might have to run to Barnes and Nobles now :)

Don't think you'll regret the D-50 at all.

I bought one a few months back and am very happy with. The 18-55 kit lens that comes with it is pretty good, but I have found it to be on the soft side. Suposedly the 18-70 kit lens that comes with the D-70 is pretty sweet.

Some shots with the D-50 with the 18-55:

I've worked on this one quite a bit more now that I know how to use photoshop a little better and have gotten much better results.

Those are pretty good shots IMO. I really like the 3,4, and 6th ones. I am hoping to get the camera within a week if not then might will be a month but I am so far pretty set on the D50.
