Candy cane being overthrown by cyano

I have a cyano issue which I am taking measures to minimize and where it is mostly residing on the sand bed. Nitrates are very low and everything else is within range. I suspect I have undetectable phosphates which is why I just added a phosban reactor and rowaphos.

For some reason it is also living and growing on my candy cane which Was a very healthy specimen.

How do I save this guy and kill the cyano on the coral. Dunk it in something?

Cut off the worst heads?

keep blowing the cyano off the corals with a turkey baster until the cyano goes away. May want to reduce feedings of foods as well as cutting back your photoperiod to help reduce the cyano.

Why is the cyano only growing on the candy cane and not the others?

Photo period has been reduced and now im only feeding every 3rd day.

It's been several days, have you made any progress? I had a bad cyano problem a while back and treated the tank with ChemiClean and it worked great. I know a lot of people don't like to treat with chemicals but if you get desperate. I tried to syphon mine out with lots of water changes without any luck so tried the Chemiclean and I'm glad I did.

I am getting desperate too and I still dont understand the source of it all. Its getting worse. Even my fuge with all the cheato is not keeping up.

The candy cane doesnt look like it can be saved. Strangely enough thats the only places its growing is that coral only and on the sand bed.

I hate chemicals but you might be right. I guess I have to use chemi clean.

This may be a dumb question but are you using a RO/DI unit? If not that could be a scource for your algae growth.

Definitely ro/di can be an issue.

Try the lights-out for 3 days thing, coming back with 1 day of actinic only, and make sure to draw the blinds: extraneous sunlight can bring on a bit of this stuff.

how old is the sandbed and is it visibly dirty? i had a bad cyano issue that would not go away no matter what i did... when i moved to my new house i replaced about 95% of the sandbed and it went right away.

Just dip it in some tank water mixed with Coral Disinfectant. Float the bag to keep the temperature stable. And do it after lights out.

I've dipped my canes for up to two hours in the stuff with no problems. All of them made a full recovery, even from brown jelly.

Start with a half hour dip. And be sure to give it a tank water rinse before you replace it. You might want to try a different placement. The cyano likes its spot.

It'll be fine.

I only use RO/DI as top off. Just checked the TDS reading which is 1.

Perhaps Ill change the filters once again. They arent that old.

The sandbed was somewhat dirty, but alot of it was vacummed 3 weeks ago. However this cyano is coming back with a vengence.

Sk8r- lights out 3 days. Will that affect the other corals?
