Candy Cane Growth

I recently bought a 3 headed candy cane frag. I was just wondering how they grow and expand. Does each head eventually develop a second mouth and split into 2 heads? I ask because it looks like that is what mine is trying to do. Or does in grow new heads from the base like a zoanthid?

Thanks

Each head splits it's mouth and they gradually grow apart into separate heads. Sometimes they will do a 3-way split.

Euphyllia will also split this way but will also sometimes send out a new head from the base. I don't know if calaustrea will do this or not.

I bought a frag with 3 heads on it 2 years ago for 6 $8, now its has about 17 head, it actualy started splitting after about a month.

what do you feed them?

what do you feed them?

recently purchased a frag with 8 heads. At night when our lights go out it opens and the "tentacles" expand out. Just want to make sure this is normal and that they are not hungry. Should I feed them at all/anything in particular? Any advice would be helpful.

You don't have to feed them I don't believe. Though I feed mine about twice a week with mysid shrimp. I have a little syringe & squirt them at their feeder tentacles.

In my experience, LPS corals do better if you feed them occasionally. Since they are able to take food, why not? It definately makes them grow/split faster.

I feed my candy canes mysid shrimp and zooplankton (cyclopeeze) about once a week at night when they have the feeder tentacles out.

I probably feed mine once per month because it's tentacles only come out in complete darkness and I run my moonlights till 12 it is rather a hastle to feed my tank at 1am.

I bet that if you put a little food on them when the moonlights are on then they will open up and put out feeders.

I have tried that but it just does not work with my candycanes. I can get most of my other lps like globlet corals etc to feed in the day.

I just let the mysis sit in a net inside the tank for a few minutes and my candies and acans send out their feeders and then I feed them.
