Canister filters for Nano?

Hello everyone,
I am setting up a 29gallon Oceanic Biocube on Friday. I am looking to purchase a canister filter very cheaply from one of my friends. It is an almost new Filstar as seen here

Would this be a good idea to use on a reef set-up? I was thinking I could place a ton of carbon and phosban in the media baskets, while using the coarse and fine filter pads to remove particulate matter from my biocube. I understand that I would need to clean the pads frequently, but I am ok with doing that.

I figure in the inlet could go into the right-hand side compartment and the outlet placed near the return pump in the left-hand side.
Pump is rated for about 350gph or lower.

Does this seem like a good idea?
