Canon 540ez Flash: Questions

I wanted to get a flash for my birthday so I could use it to illuminate reef shots from above, I am using a canon 300D (digital rebel) and was wondering if the 540ez would work with the 300D.

I have heard that there might be a problem using a old flash like that on a new camera, somthing about the TTL metering...

Any ideas?

it will work, but it I believe it only has TTL and not E-TTL. The 550ex will have E-TTL, while the 580ex has E-TTL II.

I wouldn't go with the 540ez, why not just get a 420ex or 430ex?

What I have hated about all the old Canon flashes is that there are separate controls for the head movements, while the latest 580ex only has one.

I was considering a similar flash but I just bit the bullet and bought a 580EX instead - the E-TTL II metering is worth it if your camera supports it.
