canon rebelxt

I think it is the best mid-long term choice for aquarists getting serious about photography, IMO, based on value (performance vs cost and likelihood to serve you long-term without need to replace). A simply outstanding camera!

I'd just suggest that you upgrade the stock lens (forego it entirely). You will quickly see its limitations (image quality and slow focus speed) once you try the lenses that you are ultimately going to end up with ;)

Depends on your budget really, if you have $500-600 to play with for a single lens you'll want to get a zoom that can satisfy most of your needs as well as tank shots. If your budget is more flexible then you can start looking into specific lenses such as primes and macros... Sigma and Canon both make a nice macro lens in the 100mm range, even the 180mm macro is nice. The little canon 50mm f1.8 is a bargain for under $100.

But if after these you're still stuck with the kit lens you will probably be better off just getting a nice zoom such as the 17-40L f4 or the sigma 18-50 f2.8.... there are many to choose from. They take great pics all-round and you'll likely get the most use out of them.

I use the Sigma 18-50 90% of the time, the Canon 100mm 1:1 macro for closeups and the 50mm f1.8 occasionally when I've maxed out the ISO and still need a faster shutter speed than my Sigma zoom will allow at 50mm f2.8...

My personal feeling is to not jump into purchasing lenses built for smaller sensors as these are getting bigger and bigger and pretty soon there will be little room for these "digital lenses". My Sigma 18-50 is also made for digitals, it was a hard call to make but I wanted the f2.8 and didn't have the $$ needed for the Canon full size lens.

Never forget that your camera will likely get upgraded one day while good lenses can last a lifetime.

Hope that helps

Giancarlo,

Where did you find 18-50 f2.8 from Sigma? I looked around B&H but all they got is 18-50 f3.5 there. Do you mind sharing the source? :)

Thank you for the links, Giancarlo. I have two Sigma lenses that I find very useful and will probably give this one a try as well. :)

I love mine as well and agree with teh lens upgrade. Check out Tamron lenses as well...

I've had mine for about 4 months and I take it everywhere, I love the thing. 90% of the pics in my (little red house) were taken with it :)

Digicam Reviews

If you haven't seen this site before, it's loaded with info about digital cameras of all types, and they do rate the Canon 350D as one of the best "Amateur" DSLR's on the market.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/

In that same class of camera they also like (in no particular order):

Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D
Nikon D70s
Pentax *ist DS2
Olympus E-500 Evolt
Nikon D50

If you want to move up to an "Enthusiast" level camera or even a Pro model, there's loads of info on those too.

I have the Konica Minolta 7D and love it. Although, be aware that KM recently shocked the photo world with their announcement that they're getting out of the biz...selling the rights to Sony. Guess they couldn't compete in terms of marketing and distribution.

But, the KM cameras, if you can still find them, are excellent and I really like the anti-shake that's built into the body...as opposed to buying extra-expensive lenses to get that same feature in the Canon or a Nikon. It's great for action shots of my son playing hockey! And the reality is that Tamron and others were making the Konica Minolta lenses anyway, so there're no shortage of glass available and it's just as good as if it had the KM label on it.

Good luck with your purchase decision.

I replaced my Nikon 995 with it, and I couldn't be happier with it. I still love and use my Nikon though. I also got the 100mm Cannon F2.8 macro lens and it is awesome. It came highly recommended here by a few people. What I do need to do is get a better everyday lens to replace the lens that came as a kit with it.

My everyday lens is the 28-135 IS USM. If I have to go wider than that, I use the Tokina 12-24.

I also replaced my Nikon CoolPix 995 for the Rebel XT. I was thinking of selling it to help with the cost but now I'm thinking of keeping it for when I dont want to bring my XT with me.

Don't sell it. It is an awesome camera and a real shame it is not made anymore. I use it for everyday stuff and the rebel for other more desirable stuff.
