canopy shield

i plan on building a canopy that is about 15-18" tall. how much space is needed between the MH and acrylic / glass shield

4inches is what i have the halides away from the shield on all of my tanks that are running them

If you have a Canopy that tall why have glass or acrylic shield?

Why not use eggcrate or nothing at all?
