CC skimmer maintenance req's?

I'm thinking about doing a 4 ft. counter current skimmer DIY project but am curious about its method of operation.

Pretty much, I'm curious about how one provides maintenance for these units. I'm sure I have more questions than this, but how does one really know when the airstones need to be replaced if the PVC is non-transparent?

Any amount of info beyond the already posted "here's how you build one" would be GREATLY appreciated.

The skimmer output will drop when the stones need replaced.

You can also run an inline air flow meter. When the stones need cleaned or replaced, the meter will show reduced flow.
