Chaeto

I was wondering what some people's opinions on this idea were...

My sump doesn't have a place for chaeto currently, but I was thinking about making a "box" out of egg crate and zipties to put in my return section to contain and grow cheato in. Do you think this is a bad idea being close to the return pump? I can keep the "box" away from the return by using an edged egg crate that hooks onto one of the baffles, but it won't keep stray pieces from coming out of the "box".

If it's a bad idea, any other ideas that may work better?

I also thought about using the overflow as a possible spot to let it grow. I have a 60 cube and there's a ton of space for it to do it's thing, but I will most likely lose the benefit of having the pods go into the DT.

you can buy one of those hang in the back filters for fresh water tanks & modify to be a refugium and just hang it on the sump side (back or front) and you avoid your whole cheato in the pump issue.

I'm trying not to spend much money on it, otherwise that's a great idea. I wish I hadn't thrown my previous one away haha

That can work if you have the space but some slipping may get through the egg crate.

You can use a basket type thing with small holes if you can find one that fits.

Maybe wrapping the eggcrated box with screen like the ones used for screen patios should keep the chaeto kept together and reduce water flow in that chamber if you have strong flow in your sump

thats a great idea...I have screen left over from making a lid (not quite as fine as screen doors, but smaller than the egg crate)
