dwagner, you can also shorten the length of time you have the lights on especially if you have halides. In a typical reef the most intense lighting is only about 2 hours (midday), therefore you could possibly turn on the intense lighting for 2 to 4 hours and not necessarily all 4 hour at the same time. example 2 hours on then 1/2 hour off, then 2 on before turning off completely.
