would this calcium chloride be ok to use for 2 part? The reason I ask is that it is manufactured in China

Calcium Chloride CaCl2 95.34 %
Total Alkali Salts (as NaCl) 3.50 %
Total Magnesium (as MgCl2) not found
Other Impurities 0.16 %
Calcium Hydroxide 0.14%
Sulfate (as SO4) 0.057%
Iron (as Fe) 0.002%
Heavy Metals (as Pb) 0.001%

Maybe. There's no way to be sure without an expensive chemical analysis, though. Elements like copper and zinc can be toxic at very low levels. That said, people report success with a wide range of calcium chloride products.

try to find a product that others have used. I use calcium chloride from the pool supply store that many others have used. i see no reason to take a chance on mystery chinese salts.

Would you use it...lol?

No. Not because it's Chinese, but because I don't know what purpose it was manufactured for. If it was intended as a food additive, I probably would use it. If it was intended as an industrial flux, probably not.

There are sources of Calcium Chloride that are used in food processing. I would think that those are a better choice.

I would be suspect of anything Chinese like that. Now I need to check the stuff I have! Just never considered it would be cost efficient to ship stuff like that 1/2 around the world.

But that's me. In a real sense not sure there's a difference.

Thanks everybody! I would post the name but it just says "Calcium Chloride" in light blue letters with several different uses listed below...and at the bottom in larger letter "Made in China"
I figure to give it a try and monitor closely for any indications of trouble, I will definitely have prepared water ready for water changes. I'll also have a vector to troubleshoot if tank decline is not sudden.

usually if you are already thinking of an immediate disaster remedy, you should not do whatever you are thinking of doing. and if there is something toxic in there, it would take a lot of water changes to remove it.

No,I would not.

I'd stick with products checked more thoroughly for impurities and/or those with a long track record of trouble free use.

When it comes to using chemicals from sources other than food or pet supply stores, it is not only how it was manufactured but how it was stored. I am sure there are chemical producers out there making a chemical for pool suppilers one day and pet stores the next, off of the same line. However, I do not want to take the chance buying chemicals to use in my tank from a pool store because the calcium chloride could have been stored right next to the chorine or other chemical that would be deadly to our tanks. Who knows what the guys working in the warehouse are doing. If they knock over a pallet and spill something, it is less likely to be thrown away if it is intended to have an industrial use. I can only hope that greater care of chemicals is being done in food or pet grade products.
