hey i've tried doing the search, but it was down and what not, and so have the sight from teimt o time..

but anyhow i was wondering where i cna get info on clams, like some links to distinguish maximas, tear drops, crocea and what not... to start off keeping clams..

thanks..

Maximas will need good lighting.
IMO a real good beginner clam would be a dersa or a Squamosa.
Crocea will be the hardest to keep with high light requirments.

I agree with AzSnake.

If you have good lighting (MH) give the Maxima or Crocea a try. Before you buy any clam, your tank should be established, at least 6-9 months old with stable/good water parameters.

Here's my collection. 9 Croceas and 1 Squamosa, ranging 2.5"-5.5" in size. BTW, I no longer keep 'em all together. I moved them to the sides where the light is more intense and 3 of them are currently on the rocks.

i'll look into a dersea firs then. and research that more..

i want those that won't grow too big..

Wind: Looks like you have adequate lighting for Maxima and Crocea. However, may need to put it on the rocks, close to the top. At any rate (unless someone objects to my idea), you can try it on the bottom. If the mantal looks over extended, then move it closer to the top. I'm guessing your tank is 24" deep, mine is 18" deep and even with 250 watts HQI, I feel more comfortable moving my clams off to the side (the ones on the bottom) to get more light. However, they appeared to be doing just fine in the middle of the tank.

Here's a pic of my tank /w Giesemann. Not the best pic on hand, and I've done some updating to my sump (20G to 75G).

BTW, the Dersa and Squamosa grows much faster compared to Crocea and Maxima. But I don't think you need to worry too much. It may take sometime before it can out grow your tank. :-)

What lighting hood are you using. I like the low thin profile of it. I got a big boxy ugly sheetmetal hood thats been painted. It's time to being my lights to a new home. Also do you have a cover on your lights? If so is clear or kind of a clouded sheet of plastic?

i see. are there any more links??

so crocea or maxima then? i've read that anything over 3 inch is good, and that under 3 u need to dose phyto plankton.

Try the thread that says "some excellent readings".

Yep, I read that feeding is not really required for 2.5-3" clams.

Good luck,

James
