clam foot?

This is going to sound really stupid, but what do the byssal threads look like? Also the foot?
I went ahead and bought a 175watt MH with 10,000K bulb for the 20g, then I went out and bought a baby maxima. The clam is about 2" long. I also bought some DT's to feed him with. I had him placed on a small rock up among the rockwork, thinking that he would attach to the smaller rock and that way if I had to move him (or whatever) it would be easier for me and him. Well, it didn't work out that way. This morning I found the clam on the sand, and on the small rock, a clump of something with threads coming off of it. I went ahead and looked at the bottom of the clam, and it looks okay, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for......
The clam is closing when touched although it was a little sluggish this morning. I went ahead and fed it and it seemed to perk up after that.
I understand that if they loose their foot, that usually means they will die....I sure hope it's going to be okay:(
Thanks for your help!

Sometimes when a clam is unhappy with it's location, it will release from the rock leaving parts behind. Normally this isn't a problem for the clam. It's when the bysall is forcibly removed that causes problems for the clam.

I would leave it in the sandbed (upright of course), and let it be. Hopefully the clam will be no worse for wear.
