Ken, I'm a relative clam newbie so can't help with the dips and such. I know from research that there was a clam "disease" going around a while back. I'd think if this is still hanging around it would be a good idea to quarantine any new arrivals so as not to infect your existing clams.
If you are willing to do so the answer is a definate yes. It is helpful IMO as long as the conditions in quarantine (esp. lighting) is as good or about as good as the main tank.
