clam question

The question is can your tank support a maxima clam? What size is your tank, and what are your lights? (Maximas will need metal halide)

If your tank is approprate for a clam, I would wait at least 8-12 months before trying one. Also, if you have no other clams, I would try an "easier" clam first, and not a maxima.

I agree with almost all of what peabody has siad. Except I believe that given the right conditions, particularly enough light, there is no reason a maxima would be less suitable than a derasa or squamosa.

You can keep a maxima under pc's or vho's as long as you got plenty of wattage and they are close to the top. I keep mine under 715w of pc's. I would agree MH are better but they are not required.

How deep naso?

How deep naso?

Hi Naso,
Just reading the posts on clams. I'm very interested in them. How deep are you keeping clams with your lights? My lfs is telling me with 3 96 watters I should be able to keep a clam in my aquarium as long as I place it high up in the tank. Everyone was telling my MH's in here, but those cost so much to run, not to mention the initial expense.

Thanks

I have mine about 12" under the lights, but I have had them lower and they did fine also. I believe in your case you will be fine with 3x 96w depending on the size of your tank.

Mine is about 23" deep, but I have a good bit of live rock in there. I could get a clam to around 11 or 12 inches deep on the rocks. Maybe higher later, as I'm not through with the rock yet.

It's a 92 gal corner unit.

Hate to say it man, but I've seen many clams in people's tank starving under a few 96 watt PCs, even high up. They just don't often cut it :( Some people have had luck with Maximas under PCs are lucky because the clams are raised under natural sunlight just a few meters in the ocean, then put in tanks with Metal halide in the importers. WHen they get to the dealers (say FFExpress or ClamsDirect) they are put under metal halide. So, when they get to our tanks, they often can't adjust to PCs of VHOs, even a lot of them, and slowly starve :(
