Keeping it Simple
Hey guys,
I'm pretty ignorant to the whole clam family along with their needs. Could anyone tell me if one could keep a clam under PC lighting? For example, my tank is 12" tall and has 192 watts of pc. Can I perhaps keep a Derasa Clam? Would I have to keep him at the top? Also, my tank is a 30 gal. breeder. Is that large enough? Thanks for the help.

Thumbs up!

Your lighting should be okay for the Desera. They are sand dwellers so they should be kept in the sandbed. They do get pretty large and will probably outgrow your tank eventually. You may want to try and find a small 2-3" one.

So if I get a small, I def. have to feed him right? Would I have to spot him like a scallop? Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for the info guys. Is there a rock dwelling clam that I could keep with pc's? Remember the tank is 12" tall, and I have rock work that is about 6" away from the light (4" away from the top water level). Just curious. Again, everything is most def. appreciated!

unfortunately A Crocea and Maxima clam would not do well under PC's. Dont get me wrong, some people still do keep them alive under PC's but they do not thrive. If you "must" try to keep one under PC's you might want to try and pick up a gold maxima. I wouldnt recommend any blue/green color croceas/maximas.

What I've done with my derasa clams, is created a "bowl" shaped rock to place at the peak of one of my mountains, and put some sand in it and placed the clam in it. The sand isn't really deep, but it suits him just fine. Bought it on Friday, and he already anchored himself to that rock on Monday.

Ok, what about a Squamosa? First, can I keep that healthy and happy under PC? Second, is it a rock or sand dweller? My guess is a sand dweller. Thanks again!

contrary to popular belief Squamosa clams are reef clams found on the reef structure. it should do ok with that lighting in a tank of that depth
