Clams and VHO

I would like to here from anyone who has had experience keeping any type of clam under VHO lighting. I've talked to Barry and I am going to try squamosa's under my VHO's. The lights are only about 2"-3" from the water and the water depth is about 12" to the top of the DSB.

I'll post how things are going once I get my squamosa's. Thanks for any advice you might be able to share. :D

My Squamosa is growing great. I have a 155 bowfront with six 72" VHO lit by a pair of IceCap 660's, 3 Aquasun and 3 SuperActinic. It is on the sandbed about 20" fom the lights.

Squidman,
I would also say with your setup a squamosa would be OK. Also some small maximas would be OK also, but over the long run would need MHs.

Guy, I am setting up a 150 reef wanting to use vho. I see that you are running 6 72" vho's on 2 IC 660's. I wanted to use this same, but thought the 660 could only handle 2 72" bulbs. Considered 6 60" to keep from having too much wattage.

I, too, want to be able to slowly add sps and clams once cycled. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the responses guys! :D Barry is going on a "mini-vacation" so I'll get my squamosa's at the end of next week. I'll let everybody know how things go. And Jim, if the squa's do well I may try a small Maxima later. I'm debating on converting my FW 72G bowfront to a reef or buying a new Reef-Ready Oceanic 120G. Either way the new tank will have lots of MH lighting. Then I can really go clam crazy!

The 660 is guaranteed to handle 16' of VHO. I'm not recommending using 18' but it works fine for the three 660's I'm currently using. I contacted IceCap and they said "it should be fine as long as the heat sink is used and the ballast is kept cool."

60" bulbs are an excellent compromise IMO.

Yes a VACATION :) Going to Mazatlan marlin fishing and do some diving. The water isn't the best like Cancun but I will make the best of it. :)

Hey Barry, if your going to go marlin fishing then try my lucky lure. Get a 9" natural brown/clear bulb squid mabe by Yo-Zuri, the egg shaped weight about the size of the grapes with seeds, a double hook rig with #9/0 hooks and 150+ lbs. line. Then put the weight as farup as it will go and thread the line through. Be sure to thread some beads after the weight so the first hook dosen't scrunch the body and you got a good combination that has caught every thing!!!!!!:D

Back to the topic. I think a squamosa would do great under VHO's.
BTY Guy, thats some good growth! and I like the green under th mantle.:D
