Clams from Vietnam?

I've read some vague negative comments regarding clams from Vietnam. What is the issue with these? Poor survival, collection practices, etc?

The clams in Vietnam are ripped off the reef, therefore there foot, and bysal fillaments are damaged beyond repair. Death of the animal ends in almost every situation.

Also, IME, Vietnam does less shipments to us than a place like say Fiji. Therefore, often times the clams may have to siit in sub standard (stressfull) conditions longer than if they were in a more active collection zone.

You have probably heard about this because of the new Solomon Island teradrop maximas coming in to few (maybe only one) wholesaler in LA. The Solomon Island teardrops are in much better shape because they are attached to a rock. This shows that their foot isnt damaged.

Im hoping to see these clams live just as well as my other Pohnpei maximas. if they do, ill definately pick one up.

Was talking with Barry at Clams Direct and he said last year the tear drop clams that were coming in from viet Nam had a bad mortality but the ones that are coming from Solomon are doing very well. He has had some for 6 weeks now and doing great. He just got in some more but haven't posted them. he wants to make sure they are ok before selling them. Would love to have one but they go so fast.

Sharon - So I assume that you are referring to Solomon clams that Clamsdirect is holding now. Just wanted to be clear on that.

So as long as Vietnam clams look healthy under a normal inspection you'd perform on any specimen, there's nothing else negative about Vietnam clams?

I think what she was trying to say, is that the Viet Nam tear drops that we coming in last year, did not live very long beyond a few days. You can do a search here , I remember that Peter and other got them last year and no one was keeping them alive. It was thought that they were just being pulled off the rocks other than carefully being removed and also a shipping problem.

Court_Jester- The solomon islands clams that Barry is holding SHOULD be healthy. A couple of other stores and individuals have bought them from the same wholesaler in LA (No names).

I would go ahead and order one if you are interested. I will order one soon myself.

Teardrops have been said to ship poorly. My take on that is this:

The Viet Nam tears shipped poorly because they were already stressed. However, since these solomon island clams are supposedly collected in a safe manor, they should shoip like any other wild clam.
