Clams in 20 gallon

Clams really aren't nitrate producers like fish, nor do they need space to move around - in fact, they'll feed on some of the nutrients in the water. Croceas can grow to about 6-9" so three or four would make for a nice display, you could even go with 4-5. Really, it's up to you. I have 5 clams in my 75: 3 maximas, one squamosa, and one crocea. I'd like to buy a few more croceas if I see nice ones.

Croceas need very intense lighting. Try to keep your 20 gallon as stable as possible - with intense lighting you'll need to blow a fan across your water to cool it and that'll induce rapid evaporation and if you're not consistently replenishing the water, you'll have wide salinity swings.

Squamosa, derasa, and maxima can get pretty big (14-20" depending on the species) so I'd avoid them.

i am getting ready to put some clams in a 29 gallon reef but i am not sure how many i will go with. i love clams so i will probably make this tank just a clam tank. i have a 55 gal reef tank right now and i have 20 clams in it. it is awesome. other than keeping the calcium up i dont have to really watch the nitrate levels or anything they really keep the tank clean.

I have a 2.5 inch black and emerald ultra maxima in my 29gal with 20 gal sump and 2x 96 watt PC.
So far, so good. 1/2 in growth in 2 months. Great colors.
I feed DTs, Kent MicroVert and don't remov the clam to feed.
