Clams in a ten gallon?

I am setting up a ten gallon nano. I currently have a 175 watt 4000K MH bulb, but wil be upgrading to a 20,000K Corallife bulb soon.

The tank will house soft corals, LPS and a few SPS as well as two A Ocellas(sp?) clowns.

I will be using a DIY 4' tall CC skimmer and cooling will be from a 4" fan in the hood and a 3' tall cooling tower. The tank (drilled) has a ten gallon sump with an unrestricted Mag 5 with about 18" of head for return.

There is a 1" seeded sand bed with 10 +- pounds of live rock in the display tank and another 10 +- pounds in the sump.

I would like to add a small, <2", T. Maxima Ultra to the tank. I think that the lighting, water movement and filtration will be more than enough. I do know these clms get big, but I plan on setting up a 200+ gallon tank before it gets too big.

Will I see any problems adding a clam?

TIA,
Mark

Hi, I'd rather go with metal halide that's closer to daylight temperature(65k-10k). The 10k's should get color blue enough to look nice. The evaporation will need attention to keep salinity in check. As far as size goes, T. maxima get 30-40 centimeters full grown. The smallest clams are the T. crocea at 13-15 centimeters. Good luck, Rob.

With that head factor your Mag 5 will be turning your water over 30-40 times per hour. I'm not sure anything can live in that.

Rob,
Go for it! I think the clam will be fine. Let me know if possible how the clam does with the 20,000k. In my tanks I use all types of ligting but am finding that the 400 watt 15,000k bulb from hellolights the clams are loving it! This is compare to 6,500k and 10,000ks in 400 watt, 150 watt, 250, and 175. The 20,000k is about the only K I am not using.

LOL

You're probably right! Actually, the return willbe deverted to the skimmer and there is a ball valve just after the tee. I can lower the flow, but have it full blast right now. So far no sand storm, so it cannot be all bad.

Jim, I'll let you know how the 20K does. I TRIED to navigate you site, but it was WAY too slow. Help up poor dial up people out! Your site is just a little too graphics intensive. You do have a good selection though. What I am looking for is and Ultra grade or better Electric Blue Maxima, preferably in the 1" to 2.5" range. Can you get such a clam? I am not ready to stock anything until I get the cooling tower and skimmer hooked up and get the 20K bulb, but I'll let you know.

Thanks,
Mark
