Clams versus anemones?

I think I've read that clams are resistant against the stings of fellow tank inhabitants.

I have a large e. quadricolor that has moved VERY close to my t. maxima. Will the BTA sting my clam?

Please help.

Thanks in advance!

I have a 4" Derasa that met a 8" BTA a few weeks back and the Derasa did not fully extend it's mantle for at least 4 days after the encounter.

Not scientific but I would watch very closely to be safe.

Good luck.

I had a small gold maxima that "hosted" in a BTA for a few days before I moved him. He was literallty right up against the BTA with tentacles flailing all over him. He didn't seem adverse to it but I was concerned he wouldn't get enough light so I moved him. I posted this on another board and several people have lost clams which they attributed to anemone stings. In Knop's book "Giant Clams" Ibelieve he says that clams are mostly immune to stings from various animals. I do know that my clams definitely do not like being touched by euphyllia corals or my fungia.

Daniel Knop says that clams are immune to the sting of corals. "Corals" can be taken to mean a few things with biologists using the term to mean the true corals or Scleractinia while with the inclusion of fire corals, it may mean anything in the classes Hydrozoa or Anthozoa. I think the reference is to the stony corals and also soft corals (probably zoanthids also). I have heard numerous reports of clams being stung by anemones but I have had no problems with many corals including a Catalaphyllia that was partially covering one of my squamosas for a few weeks.
Personally, I wouldn't risk it, anemones can sting just about anything and its better to be safe than sorry.

I was in an e-mail conversation with Anthony Calfo a few days ago discussing a new species specific type tank. I was considering doing an anemone/clam only tank and had the same question concerning BTA stings. Anthony basically said it is a non-issue and that clams don't care about anemones. At my LFS they have a 12" rose BTA attached to the side of a 8" maxima and has been that way for some two years. The mantle shades the anemone from the intense 400w MHs. :)
