Clams

If they are under 3-4" the mantle isn't big enough to provide them with enough food so you need to feed them plankton.

An easy way to make the plankton available to them is to place the clam on a flat shell so it can attach which allows an easier time moving the clam. Fill a shallow dish with tank water and add enough plankton to give the water a slight green tint then place the clam that is attached to the shell into the dish for 20-30 minutes so it can feed. If you are just dumping the plankton into the tank it may not get enough, so this is much easier. I don't have any small clams because this is kind of a pain, but that is a good way to do it. There are also many different plankton products on the market do a search to see which one will work best. I think a lot of people use DT's...or you can grow your own!! :)

what do you like a small clam would be okay under, the what lights i have to 24 watt x 2 , i have a nano cube. I was planning to get a small clam and until it gets to big trade it away... They are so COOL! If anyone has one let me know, if they want to sell it. ALso, how much would a small bottle of plankton, be? Thanks

Ok with all this clam talk I had to get myself one. I have a ? do I feed it through the open hole on the right or the tube on the left

Its in a 13inch tall tank with 150 10k mh so it has more then enough light. But where does it take in food? left or right side hole?

The hole with the fringe is called the incurrent siphon which draws water in across its gills, the excurrent siphon shoots the water back out. It's probably not be a good idea to try and squirt phyto into the hole, I don't think the clam will like it.

BTW, is that the clam you picked up for $20 off nano-reef forum? Killer deal!

Yeah it is, :D it looks much better then that under 14k lighting. The picture was taken under only 10 MH but I'm switching it out for 14k pheonix soon.

I've been keeping clams for years and haven't had too many problems with small clams. In fact, I've had a couple for around a year or with no problems. I don't feed and just have strong lighting and add calcium. I have a couple of croceas and a few maximas. Check out my home page if you're interested in any, I'm selling a couple of them. Good luck...I've been addicted to clams for 10 years now!

Kevin to tell what kind of clam it is you need to look at the shell. If it has lots of little ridges its a Maxima, if it doesn't it's a Crocea. Also your clam will like 10k lighting better than 14k. But can live under both.

Raskal311- Thats the clam you got off of dane isnt it, I have a bunch of the same ones and I dont spot feed them, I just feed the whole tank and there doing fine.

Sea Side just got in a boat load of clams, picked myself up two more. Keep in mind that the picture is taken under pure 10k lighting only.
