hey guys i have a 70 reef, i was to knwo what clam would do best under VHOs, the tank is 48 inches long, with 6 46.5 inch VHOs, 4 on a Ice cap 660 and 2 on a 430, 3 super actinic, 2 acitnic white, and 1 aqua sun. the total wattage is 660 watts, close to 10 watts per gallon, so what clams would do good on my SANDBED???? thats the only place they can go on the sand!!! thanks so much!

Nick

alright thanks!

but that didnt really answer my question, i do not know what they refer to as strong or moderate lighting in temrs of VHOs??? so anyother thoughts? thanks!

Nick

squmoasa or dersae (sorry about the spelling, it's late - you know what I mean) - both with thrive under moderate lighting (i.e vho vs mh). If you go with a maxima or crocea put it WAY up on your rock work. HTH

alright so basically i can get a dersa or squamossa i dont have a clue how to spell that either, but i can put those 2 types of clams on the sand bed in my tank, right????? and they will thrive and grow and be happy???? also are there any cool colors of these two types of clams??? i want a colorful one too?

and then if i wasnt a maxima i have to put it WAY up on the reef, right? BUT will that thrive and grow or no??? i do not want to get one if its not going to be healthy and grow.

well thanks!

Nick

I have 2 squmoas (on the gravel and 1 Maxima (1/2 way up) in my 75 with 440 watts of VHO and all 3 are doing good. You should do fine with any clam in your setup (I am assuming your tank is 20" deep).

It's hard to say for your exact set-up, and I have only personally kept clams uder mh, but, I know people that have luck w/ keeping clams uder vho.

And yes there are very cool colered dersaes and squmaosas - check out marinedepot.com. Try one of them and put it on the sandbed - you'll be able to tell if it's happy or not, if it's not (for example if you see a little bit a of bleaching and non-uniform colro across the mantle) - move it up on the rock work.

Good luck - I think you'll be OK w/ one of these clams. Feeding phyto helps too.

yeah thanks,

but i ahve one more ? for you guys,

how do you attach them? do you just put it in your sand? or i thought you were spsoed to be it like on half of a clam shell??? and what is gaping? thats bad right??

oh yeah so basically i just try one of the dersa or squamusa and then if they do good try to get a maxima? right??

thanks so much for all your help!

Nick

my tank is about 4.5 months old today, so i haev to wait about 1.5 months more befor ei get the clam just reseaching!!

the calcium and alk are keep up by dosing everyday with a supplement for alk and one for calcium they are held constat at 446 for calcium and 12 dkh! i am planning to get a calcium reactor soon, but i have to save up some money seeing how i am only in high school!haha!

any thoughts? thanks!

Nick

I have found that many people are happy to tell you "I have had great success with my squamosa under PCs" however, 'great succes' might be a fews month to them. Some people have kept them longer, but most probably havent been keeping them too long.

Wont you wont find often however, is people stepping up and saying they have killed one or more clams and they werent using MH.

I have mine of the sand, but, I have mh lighting. For you, try to find a place up on your work and place the clam there, if it likes the spot it will attach. Becareful, falls are common and to be expected. Good luck.
