Cleaning wood before painting

What's the best thing to clean a dirty old wood stand with before painting? I figured Pledge would leave some unwanted residue, and water might warp it. Advice?

Try TsP ( Tri-Sodium Phosphate ). Youll find it at HD in the paint dept.

Also, what brand of stand? I know that the Oceanic stand has a waterproof finish, and I was told that you couldnt refinish it.

It's a DIY stand, I think it has some sort of stain on it but not sure. I suppose I should stand it down and I'll try that TSP.

Sand it and use a good primer that we'll fix your problem.
