Controller email question

Can anybody tell me what the connection between the web interface status screen and the SMTP server in the email setup in Aquanotes 3 is?

I read in another thread where out-going mail gets blocked. So I changed my outgoing mail server to mail.bortnet.com (also got this from the other thread) and now get an email from Aquanotes. Problem is when the email is working and I log in through the browser interface and do a status I get 'Aquacontroller not responding'. If I put the mail server back to Comcast I get a status from the browser, but email doesn't work.

This is very frustrating. Shouldn't be this hard.

That doesn't make any sense; there have not been any bugs/problems reported that show any kind of behavior like that. What is the version and date of the firmware in the controller (see self-test)?
