converting euro reef with gate valve?

I've seen a lot of peopl that convert their euro reef skimmer with a gate valve, i bought a gate valve but it's bigger then i thought , can i still use it or does it make a difference on the size? i had it hooked up the way to do it and it didn't work very well.
does anyone have any better info on hooking up this type of setup.

I assume if the pipes connected you'd be fine. Is the gate valve not closing adequately? Is the "not working well" to mean that it didn't produce skimmate or wasn't adjustable on bubble height from the top to the bottom of the collection cup? I bought the kit and it works fine here's a picture.
