What is your experience with copperband butterfly fish and clams? I am also interested if you can post how long they have co-existed together.

It's been a couple of months and so far (knocking on wood) no problems. It decimated my aiptasia population, but refuses to eat any prepared foods I offer the tank. Only thing I can get it to eat is freshly smashed little neck clams, cockles, and muscles. I'm keeping it to ensure the aiptasia don't return, but eventually I'll pass it along to another needy reefkeeper.

I got my cobberband sometime last summer so it has nearly been a year now. There was a poll on copperbands in the main forum a while back you might also check out:

There is no question that they will eat any feather dusters that you have though and will try to eat any spaghetti worms that you have as well. For me having a tank without aipastasia is well worth not being able to keep any feather dusters and there are plenty of good detritivores other than spaghetti worms.

Here's something I never expected. Tonight I noticed the copperband trying to eat a nassarius snail! He must have been hungry tho...I tossed in a little neck clam and he happily chowed that instead. Just thought I should mention it.

[thanks]

Today I have one reserved at the LFS. It has been in a few weeks (I remember seeing it for the last 3) and is named as an Australian Copperband. I today observed it eat very active and ate alot even in competition with the other fish in the tank. It looked fat and healthy. Initially, it is going into my quaranteen tank that I will put in aiptasia rocks to train it into eating them. I will decide if it goes into the main reef tank at a later stage. Alternativley it will keep in a large 180 gallon SW tank in the garage and cycle it in/out of the tank if necessary or trade it back to the LFS / another reefer. Beautiful fish.

I have a copperband in my 180 with my clams. The copperband has been in this tank for a year and a half. I have had clams in there over a year and as long as the clams are in the rock structure there is no problems. I have a big derasa I was going to try on the sand bed and as soon as the clam was placed the copperband went after it. I immediately removed it back to the 120 and all is well. As long as the clams{now there are 8} are in the rock I have no trouble at all. Mine has never even looked at aiptasia and will eat frozen mysis and brine.

MiNdErAsR,
When you say littleneck clam, do you mean like a steamer clam, or a clams-on-the-halfshell clam?

Jim,
Whatever type the local fish market has labeled as littleneck's. Sorry I can't be more specific.

:)

If a clam is not healthy, there may be a problem. My CB and clam get along great. Recently my 'CB' has taken a liking to eating "ReeferMac's mystery meatloaf"- a combo of frozen fresh squid, fish, clams etc. etc. Mysid and brineshrimp are also a fav!

My crocea and copperband were happy for a year...the 'fly cleaned all the tubeworms off of the clam though!

(yay. 500 posts.)
