Coral line growth

I have not read much on this so I am still unsure. In my tank I ave live rock that is encrusted with the purple (looks hard) coral line. I was just wonder how long it takes for that to spread to other rocks, what helps it and what to look for. Just wondered if mine was doing anything or not.

I know that you want to keep your calcium levels up high (400-450 ppm) also the coraline tends to grow in areas that aren't subjected to high levels of light. I know that the rocks in my tank that aren't completely exposed to the halides tend to have better growth. I'm sure there are other things involved too but as far as I know those are probably two of the bigger ones.

Hey, does anybody know if coraline responds better in certain light spectrums?

I have heard that if you take a toothbrush and brush the coraline rocks, it helps it to spread it and seed the tank. Calcium levels are also important. Above all I think it is one of those things that just takes time.

I have found that with my MH bulbs it tends to be a lighter color. More pink. It also does not grow as much. When I had just PCs it was more purple and it grew pretty fast.

Like Melissa said earlier. If you scrap off some and let it float in your water column it helps it to spread faster.

Also, when I dosed with ESV B-Ionic 2 part system it helped the coraline to really take off. I believe it has to do with the calcium and the high alkalinity that contributed to the coraline to grow.

Thanks,
Michael

Calcium, Alkalinity and light are all big factors. Keep the Ca/Alk up and it will grow. I have also been using Salifert amino acids for a few months and now I get some great colored coraline growing even some bright reddish orange stuff that I have never had.

Mine is growing practically overnight on some surfaces: it seems to favor coral live rock. It's heavy dark purple under MH. I have very high calcium (470) and magnesium (1500). I'm trying to correct the water imbalance by raising alk, but hope my coralline growth rate doesn't decline when I do.
