coralline algae

what is the importance/significance of coralline algae? some people let it grow out of control, while others clean it up. It certainly looks prettier if it's cleaned up, but does it serve an ecological purpose?

I need to disagree here Dwayne. Coralline is part of the natural filtration system in your tank. It's growth ties up nutrients that would otherwise fuel the growth of nuisance algae. Sure, one can grow macro algae and do the same thing but coralline need not be pruned to any great extent. Removing it from the glass is as simple as scraping and, if you run a power filter during that scraping, if can be removed as an export mechanism. Very often coralline is overlooked as a benefit to one's tank.

Whatever is added to the tank needs to be removed somewhere down the line.
An example is fish food; as food is eaten it nourishes the animal, however what is expelled is waste.
Other particles of uneaten food also become waste.

Biological filtration such as algae and bacteria absorb this excess as where mechanical filtration captures or binds the waste.

By cleaning/changing filters or pruning algae from the tank, you physically remove the excess nutrients in the tank.

The oldest and best known method is through regular water changes.

Sorry Tom but I think you are over rating it. Sure it can help but I don't see it helping enough to make a difference.

Dubbin1,
Cmon Dwayne. My coralline is really growing nice. I was in a happy place with Tom's reply but now my world is not so happy as it was.
