hi was wonderig a little about everyones opinions on crocea clams. i have a 250 10k w 2 55 watt actric coral life pc bulbs and 1 96 watt coral life smart light all on a 40 gallon tank. do you think this is sufficient light for crocea. i have maximas as well as squamossa clams.

I think that your lighting is more than sufficient.

I think Crocea's have a bad rap for needing too much light.

In my experience Crocea's seem to be one of the hardier species of clams out there.

I have been told that derasas are the hardest and then Hippopus.

Ron,

I assume you meant to say the hardiest, not the hardest.

Derasa's are very tough clams, as long as you can house a 20" to 24" full grown clam. Whereas Crocea clams reach about 6" to 9" at maturity.

Really what I meant to say, and did not convey, was the fact in my experience Crocea's are much hardier than Maxima's. What I was referring to was onegreenray's question of his lighting situation. He did not ask what was the hardiest species of clam.

I had one unfortunate experience where I went away for a long weekend, and my pump intake became clogged. This reduced my water flow down to a trickle. I suffered a large Maxima loss, but not one single Crocea went bad, and at that time the Crocea's outnumbered my Maxima's 2 to 1.

I would agree that Derasa, Squamosa and Hippopus are hardier than Maxima's and Crocea's. But I hold the Crocea as the toughest of the prettier clams. But since beauty is the eye of the beholder, to each his own.

Best of luck, Rob

Excuse the typo :)

Guess it would depend how someone would look at it. Yes, derasas can get 20cm plus but that doesn't happen overnight.

Followed the clam disease this past year and reports indicate that when everything else was dying, the derasas were the ones left standing. :)

Knop go on to say that Croceas are harder to keep than a Maxima, their gills are finer and will clog easier than a Maxima.

Everyone has their opinion, nothing wrong with that :)

I agree w/ Ron-croceas tend to have problems in less than pristine water. Circulating particles like sand and debris lead to their ultimate demise in a closed system.
Under the right circumstances and in an established aquarium they will thrive and grow but much less than a comparable maxima.
Ray-your light is fine!
