Hi Pasenah, i would be more inclined to have the cryptic zone after the refugium/dsb where alot of the detritus will be trapped in the dsb area and not allowed in the cryptic zone which does not tolerate any detritus build up. you could go one step further and have a semi-cryptic zone before the cryptic zone to help process detritus naturally and more effectively!
Hey Pasenah, its not really the design thats important, but more so the invertebrates that you use to process the particulate organic matter before the cryptic zone. i would use tube worms (Bispira viola), flame scallops, red head goby. these organisms are particularly helpful at processing POM. you should definitely add phytoplankton as a supplement to the detritus their getting. the design of the area should have a good flow to keep the POM in suspension and have your overflow from your tank go straight into the semi-cryptic zone as this surface active water contains the most organics. for more info on cryptic zones look at www.dynamicecomorphology.com and i'll try my best to answer any questions you have!
