Custom Stand 20 Gallon Tank

I'm looking at making my own stand for a 20 gallon (freshwater) tank, and was wondering what I will need and what do I need to know. I already have a preety good ideal on how I want to set it up, but I'm not sure on what kind of wood to use or how to prep it before i stain it. Any tips will be appreciated.
