Cyanobacteria (red slime) woes ...

Yea I have a 55g tank. I don't think one of those big skimmers would even fit in my sump. I was looking at the Tunze DOC skimmers. What do you guys think about those?

I have a couple of them and I like them. They do a great job and they have a small footprint.

What do you guys think of the Tunze DOC 9010 skimmer? I know it might be too much of an overkill for my 55g since its rated for tanks up to 264g but I plan ti use this same skimmer when I upgrade my tank to maybe a 150g in the future.

Skimmer ratings are (usually very VERY) overstated.... I wouldn't really keep much more than a 75g, maybe 100g or something. Nothing in the 6' range IMO.

It should be great for that size tank.

Since I have a softy tank and some LPS I have heard that its actually not necessary to have the water so clean since there are a lot of filter feeders. Ive heard with SPS tank that the water should be real clean because SPS are more sensitive. Is that true?

That's partially true... Kinda sorta... SPS are filter feeders as well, but also need intense light, hence why you want clean water. LPS and softies can handle there being some dissolved nitrate or phosphate in the water, where SPS are very intolerant of anything more than minute readings of them.

As for the 9010 on a 150g, ask Illal, as if I remember correctly, that's what he ran for a while before he got his beckett skimmer.

I have a DAS ex-1 that would be perfect for your tank size. I had it on my 150g total system with 5 tangs and 15+fish with no nitrate problems.

for a reef tank you should take 40% of what skimmer is rated for. So that tunze 9010 skimmer would be good on a 100 gal reef tank.
