Dendrophyllia in nature

Does anyone have any information where dendrophyllia's are collected in nature. I mean more than country / ocean but habitat too (i.e. deep water, turbid, etc). From what I have heard is they are (partially) photosythetic, is this true?

Also, where have you had success in keeping them in your tank. Under what intensity of lighting and current.

i'm curious to know too.... anybody??? I know there are folks out there with these beauties.

Dendros aren't photosynthetic at all.
I keep mine in low current, and IME they're impartial to the lighting.

Never seen you on this board before Viper.

I have seen many pics of Viper's dendro's on other boards and would definitely listen to him on this subject. He has some VERY nice dendro's from the pics he has posted!

Nice corals you have there Viper. Thanks for the link to your other post... Have you had much growth since August? Any tips or tricks you have learned to aid in their health or growth?

I have fragged the dendro once and there was a bit of extra tissue left on the skeleton, which has now turned into 5 new baby polyps. Nothing new in terms of growth other than that though.
Just make sure they're eating a lot, at least 2 times per week and they'll stay healthy. I try to feed mine everyday, when I can remember.

I have had mine for about a year under 400w 20k mh. In moderate/high flow & try to feed 2 times a week. This is an older picture & they have grown bigger.

Nice pictures.... racer, nice colony you have there. What color is the base, in the picture it looks pink. How big was it when you first got it?

Mike

In what videos (from Discovery Channel and Animal Planet) that I have seen, they were found under overhangs on the coral reefs since they do not do photosynthesis(I didn't see a large colony though, so I don't know how big they could get in nature ... I suppose it depends on predation and how much food they can get). I couldn't guess what type of flow they were in though.

nice dendros I've been looking for them in the NY area cant seem to find them anywhere. I cant even find Orange Tubastrea.

Mike-
The base is pink and it has about 10 heads. The 2 colonies that I have always stay open, pretty cool coral.
