diatom filters?

diatom filters?
Is it ok to run a diatom filter for a short period after disturbing the tank? (I have a sand cloud from arranging rocks and new corals!!! PH fell in sand bed of sugar fine sand!!!! Everything is covered!!!! )It is something that was all the craze in the 80's and early 90's. Just wondering what the feelings are towards it now.

Thanks, Kristin

Yep, we just discussed this in a thread called 'diatomaceous earth'. I wondered if they still made the equipment, and yes, it's still used, but not as much as needs be with posts like "my three year old fed my fish" and "my cucumber just went to ooze." I sold mine, fool I, when I sold my last tank, but if you've got one, yes, I'd do it, and have, never with a problem. Now and again we'd rile a bad spot in the sand bed deliberately and run the diatom, and never had a problem with it. I'm told a company named Vortex makes them, and there may be---I've heard hints---an enclosed cylinder cleaner with a 1 micron filter, which may or may not involve d.e.
