Dimensions of 3130/2 and 3140/2 ???

Herbie

Yep,that one
Hi,
I am looking for the overall dimensions of the Comline 3130/2 and the 3140/2 protein skimmers. I have been to the Tunze website (among others) and I am having a hard time seeing the details of the overall dimensions of these units. I am looking for the overall height, above and below the waterline for the 30 and 40. I will be mounting one in my overflow box, where I can easily control the waterlevel. Will these units mount (fit) at least 2"-4" (or more) below the rim of the tank at the sug. water level for the skimmer? In other words, If the level of water in my overflow box is 4" below the rim of the tank, will the skimmer "cup" clear the rim of the tank if it is "inside" the overflow box slightly. I think that the overall height of the 3140 is 19", so does that mean that the unit will sit above the water level 7"-8"? How much adjustment is there on the holding device? What is "built in depth"? Is it just the depth of water that the skimmer must be submerged in?
I am looking for a QUIET skimmer.........would a 3130/2 or 3140/2 fit the bill?
Thanks for any help or answers. I am excited to find a skimmer that will fit my needs perfectly, and I cant wait to try one out soon.
Thanks for the help...............Herbie

I'll try to figure this out tomorrow at work. Is this for your 58? I will try to locate a reef ready Oceanic tank I can check it out in.

With the mounting hardware it measures 4.5wide by 5.25 deep by 19" high for a 3140 16.5" for a 3130. Of this 11" must be submerged and 12.75" of the skimmer should be below the overflow box for the cup to fit as it will not fit down into the box. It will not be possible to fit the skimmer if you intend to use the overflow box. It will only work if it is plugged off and then you might as well cut the box out. It won't work because the standpipe required to raise the water level would take up room needed for the skimmer. If you plan to cut out the overflow box ReefPack 500 would be the best investment. Both skimmers are very quiet, i can't think of one that is quieter. When properly tuned they have only a subtle whistling noise that is barely audible unless you are right on the skimmer.

Roger,
Thanks for the FAST answers!
Yes this is for my 58 oceanic RR. I am NOT using the stock overflow in the "conventional" manner. I dont have a sump. It is drawing water in to feed a canister filter under the tank, more like a closed loop set-up. So I dont have a standpipe, just an intake screen threaded into the bulkhead at the bottom of the box. I am still using the pump return standpipe in the stock position though. The overflow box is approx 9" wide so the width shouldnt be the problem. Its just the height issue.
The tank water stays at a constant level, and only inside the overflow box is where the water level changes due to evap. I can keep the water at a consistant level in the overflow box with my dosing pump (with kalk.). So I can keep the water level anywhere from just under the "teeth" of the overflow down to approx 3" from the bottom of the box. But the lower I go with the water level, the more "waterfall" noise I have. So I generaly run the water level between 4-6" below the teeth in the overflow box. But that level I can adjust.
I was thinking I could put the 3140/2 submerged into the box just so the "cup" is slightly above the tank rim. And because of the 3" neck on the 3140, that should put my "set water level" approx 4-6" below the rim to accomodate the proper water level for the skimmer. But I can adjust my water level to accomodate the skimmer!
So that is my specialized installation.............What do you think? Sorry for the long winded post, but I really think that this can work. I want to run a Tunze and I hate Equipt. inside or hanging on the back of the tank.
I really appreciate all your help on this install!
Thanks.................Herbie (Roger).

I am having a hard time visualizing it but it sounds like it would work. The reefpack is smaller than an overflow box so it is my preferred and with clever rock work it is invisible and the price is nominally over that of a 3140/2 and includes auto top off and a really top notch mechanical filter. What I do is build a frame of PVC and drill and stack the live rock to form a box of rock around the filter.

Thanks for your help and advise. I will have to check out the Reefpack now too. Great, more decisions!!! I am not sure which way I am going yet........but it WILL be Tunze!!!! I am looking at the streams too.
It seems that while other manufactures may come and go, (here today, gone tomorrow) through the years, Tunze remains rock solid.
Again, THANKS for your help !!!!!!!!
Herbie

Staying small has certain advantages- no big payroll to make and a lot of flexibility to explore new ideas. It also means you know exactly who screwed up what :)
