DIY bio media?

Im currently building a big W/D filter and am looking for the best alternative to bio balls. Is there anything i can get from y local hardware store to make my own? It seems simple but some suggestions would be appreciated.

I've heard of people using plastic dishwashing scrubbies, but I personally don't trust that they're not impregnated with some soap or demulsifier.

Since a lot of reefkeepers have been switching from bioballs, you might be able to find some cheap at a local club or in the buy/sell/trade forums.
