DIY kalk reactor..........

waverz

Slave to the reef!
I made a Kalk reactor today, it was super easy and fairly cheap. Now i have RODI Kalk water for my topoff water. I just too a water filter canister filled 1/4 way with pickling lime, the water goes in and down to the bottom, it then bubble up throught the kalk and then in to the sump. Its all controlled by a float vavle located in my sump. I made a pretty good mess hooking up, i managed to spray myself and a bunch of other stuff with kalk but thats all part of the fun.

Heres a pic:

Pretty simple design, ill probably put some 90's on it so its not so weird looking bu tit works for now. My only worry is that kalk will make the float valve stick, but ill keep my eye on it, maybe an inline filter on the output would prevent that, i tried using the filter that came with my aqualifter but i guess its not rated for that much pressure because when i tried it the lid blew off and sprayed kalk everywhere...what a mess.

looks great. is that just a 10" housing or the 20" as i am looking to do the same thing only using a 20" housing.

it's amazing how simple some thing is that you can make a 200 dollar piece of eqiupment from 50 bucks :p

Hmmm, not to bad of an idea! I'll wait and see if it makes your tank explode or something first before I make one though! :D That's just your luck.

So how does it work? How do you supply water to the reactor and do you have a pump that pumps it to the tank?

Its just hooked it straight up to my RODO unit so its the water pressure that pushes it, the float vlave controls how much goes in the tank.

Sam, i wanted to get teh 20" but it was just too much money.

The kalk won't clog the line it is the kalk's reaction with the CO2 in the air that causes build up. So the filter idea wouldn't do anything.

Also does the force of water in the input bubble the kalk up enough to kick any solid kalk into the output?

Think getting sprayed with kalk is bad try getting a mouth full of it.:eek1:

In the words of Ralf Wigem "It taste like burning"

does kalk really burn? The few times I've tasted it, it was just chalky. I guess I have never swallowed it before though.

When I mixed it at 2TB per gallon it did. Back when I used the stuff I was trying to syphon start my top off with my mouth and got a good drag of it.

I just made some changes to it, i added some elbows and actually used pvc glue on the fittings so they wont leak.

;)

I think i need to turn my CA reactor down abit, my PH seems to be dropping alot....man i sure love this ACII.
