These are pics of my DIY skimmer and collection container before going under the knife.
This skimmer is ready to move on!. I'll be moving it to a quarantine tank, after some modifications.
I'm ready to push the air driven skimmer envelope higher!
This is the original thread for the skimmer.
I know she wasn't built for the eyes, but I did manage to make a "first timers luck" skimmer that works. It is, however, not powerful enough for the tank it's currently on. (this only due to the amt. of air it pulls, and the amount of space under the tank) The new design only calls for a gate valve mod, an increased neck length, a Coralife Luft pump w/ four 3" (rather than 2" Rena400 driven) limewood airstones, a 2" pvc union (after the flange), and a pvc 4" to 2" reducer (trimmed) between the flange and the union. Also, I've been feeding it with a needlewheel style venturi intake, rather than a tank return, downdraft bubble cavitating chopper. The water height in the neck, was unsteady and fluxuated when set up like that.
This skimmer is fed by a maxi-jet 1200, with my fishing line needle mod, and also will be, after the modifications and tank move. The union will allow me to keep the outdated wingnut flange opperable, and I should only have to open the flange once a month to change the airstones.
I will be posting new pics of this project here, when they're available.
PS.... hehe, notice the curious yellow tang in the top left corner of the bottom pic.
