Thanks, I'm submitting designs to a custom furniture maker. I'll have to take out the back right green 2x4 to make sure I have room for the corner drains.

That will be fine because it is just a nailer and isn't necessary.

My plagiarism. Added two more blue's on the bottom to hold my sump and took out the back corner green nailer so my drain's can go through the plywood. Now I just have to decide on what I want the darn thing to look like...

How are the purple attached? Are they screwed into green strips and also screwed together? Are they also screwed into bottom rails & top rails. If so you need very long screws?

I may be wrong, as usual:), but I think the greens are needed to keep the purples in place. The green could be put outside the box, on the back, so they will do no harm to the drain thing and still help fixing the purples.

Tank 48.5w * 19D

Tank 48.5w * 19D

Should I make Tank exactly 48.5 wide or should I round up or down.? It is an acrylic tank. I plan on putting 1 more Blue cross member on top & 2 on bottom. this is a temp situation for @ 2 months. Do I need to put plywood on top? Do I need to cover sides. Size & type of screws?

Purple legs, how do they get attached? To frame bottom & top? If so than need 5 " screws. Directly to green strips?

I need to start project today. Please let me know.

The first stand I built was for a 55 gal that I wanted to be taller than the norm. I used basically this design with one change. On the purple vertical supports I used one 2x4 that I ripped at a 45. I then flipped one of them arouns and glued & screwed it back together into an L shape. I wanted to reduce any tendency to twist and create a bigger opening for access to the sump etc.

this is a great thread

this is a great thread

I wish I would've found this thread sooner as it would've saved me a couple of revisions.

My stand is very similiar to the recommended design with the exception of the green screw strips. I originally had the screw strips in my design, but I used 2 x 2 wood instead. Then I decided to try L and corner brackets and I found that I liked these better and they seemed just as strong and used up less real estate inside the stand. Lastly, all the wood was also glued together prior to the screws for a little extra security.

My main concern is earthquakes since I live in San Francisco. Does any see any problems or concerns?

Now if there was only a thread on skinning the stand... (I'm still in the planning part of this step, so I'm looking for suggestions.)

Thanks

Something does not make sense Here?

Something does not make sense Here?

It says D-3 for yellow and blue.

If I want to make depth 19", then 19-3 =16

16 + 2" (from 2*4)=2" (from other 2*4)= 20" not 19"

Height I want is 30" Purple uprights

30-7 = 23

23+4" of 1 (2*4) + 4" (other 2*4) = 31" not 30"

Am I doing something wrong?

Woops, back to the drawing board for me.

I love the frame design - open access to the front and sturdy as well. I do have one question though. After skinning this frame (with either 1/2 or 3/4 plywood) and building it for a 75g aquarium (48"x18"), how much will just the stand weigh?

Great thread,

I am planning on 40 gallon breeder (36" x 18" x 16" 458 lbs ) in wall with the viewing window of the tank flush with the wall.

I would like the stand to be about 50" tall so that the the tank is at eye level.

What modifications would need to be done to the stand design?
(ie the front of the tank is in the wall and the legs are not)

I think the best way would be to take the sheetrock off the tank room side of the wall, header off the opening, cut the studs in the bottom half short, and build the stand over top of the bottom studs. You can then incoporate the wall side of the stand into the wall itself and have the rest of the stand in the fish room. Put simply, you are making a window and using the window framing for one side of the stand.
